It is so fsafe because your hands are not close to the blade which is very sharp. It does a wonderful job for slicing potatoes into uniform slices for scalloped potatos. Also good for french fries and match stick veggies for stir fry. I use it so much more than I thought I would. There is a small amount of clean up but it is so convenient to slice with this instead of a knife. My only negative comment is that I wish the food chute was a little larger. You have to cut down the veggies and if it were just a bit larger you could do whole potatos and onions as well as other veggies. You just need to make sure you cut the veggies and fruits to fit the food chute.
