Review: A Bag of Smashed-Up Crabs - It's What's for Dinner - This is what is says and more - crab shell and scraps, which for my needs is perfect. I use this to help satisfy land hermit crabs and crayfishes cannibalistic yearnings. Few things are as tasty to crabs as other crabs, and I suppose eating yourself is as close the perfect diet as you can get. Most of the time social and gregarious, land hermit crabs do have a dark side and will sometimes dig up a molting friend, pull them out of their shell, kill and eat them. (Crayfish can hardly ever resist making a meal out of a newly molted buddy, no 'sometimes' about it.) Both species will eat their own molts as well as any others they can get a hold of which further tends to indicate their shells are an important and coveted food source. A lot of attention is given to providing invertebrates with extra calcium but I doubt supplementing calcium alone is really of much use. The mineral makeup of skeletons and exoskeletons is complex and letting the animal supplement their own diet as naturally as possible is probably a better solution. I was very happy to find this big bag-o-crab which the critters enjoy picking through for the best bits - whatever they may be. I rinse it to remove any surface salt for the crayfish, and feed it 'as is' to the sea loving hermit crabs. According to the ingredients it contains only crab shell and scraps. As far as being "organic" - well....... your guess is as good as mine just what that means but I've had no issues with any animal eating it. It smells fishy, I would expect that. I would be suspicious if it was odorless. I've no idea what it does for plants, but it is a great find for someone with many invertebrate mouths to feed.

**Q: what is chitin?**
A: Chitin is most commonly recognizable as the hard whitish parts of a crab shell although it is one of the the main substances in many exoskeletons (creatures that are hard on the outside-- like crabs, lobsters and many insects-- have exoskeletons rather than internal bones).

**Q: When putting a plant in the ground, should this be put around the roots or near the top of the soil? All tips appreciated!**
A: Hi there, we generously applied the shells to the top of the soil of our raised beds and then tilled in to a depth of about 6-8". We found that this product really helped us with the calcium deficiency we were having here in Colorado, causing end-rot on our tomatoes and peppers. I think we will try applying it around the base of our plants as needed  (after big rain events) next year too because, even though it helped tremendously, a few of our plants still had some problems. I think either application of the shells, around roots or top, will work, depending on the severity and nature of your problem or your fertilizing needs. Hope this helps a little.

**Q: I assume the crab has been cooked in some way before the shell is removed.  Does anyone know how the shell is processed?**
A: I doubt it's been processed. It's simply crushed crab and crab shell. Smells like it too. Ingredients: Crushed crab and crab shell.

**Q: Can this product be used as fertilizer for my spring bulbs ?**

Be prepared for the strong fishy smell. It'll attract flies to your garden. Once I covered veggie plants with mulch, it cut down the fishy odor. I'm assuming it's working. This is my first time using the product.
