The general purpose of the binder as we use it is to place a layer over the pencil drawing so when painting with acrylics the graphite will not smudge or distort during the paining process. It does not replace the gesso process. **Q: Is this the binder medium for making your own acrylics from pigments?** A: We would not recommend this binder for making your own paint. Instead it used more for isolation layers and preparing your canvas to use theo ther Atelier products. You would be better off using an acylic gel medium for creating your own acrylic paints. **Q: Would this be useful for applying over acrylic to which I'd then add oils?** A: I’m not sure. I use it as an isolation coat between acrylic paint and varnish so that the varnish can be removed at a future time if needed. The varnish is solvent based and can be removed with turpentine without affecting the paint layer under the isolation coat (or so I’ve read). I would guess that you can use the oil paints on top of a coat of binder medium, I’m just not sure why you would, since I don’t think the oil paints would mix with the acrylics after they had dried. However I’ve not used oils, so as I stated, I’m not sure. Good luck. **Q: will this work over leather? I need a base to paint with acrylics since the leather absorbs the paint and needs lots of coats.
