These emergency lights are good for what they are. There are 3 LED bulbs that will shine in a horizontal position or if you desire there are 2 LEDs that you can have shine vertically (from the top of the unit). Depending where you mount the unit will depend on which way you want the light to shine. These units will not light from both spots simultaneously so you need to pick which works best for your situation. Just to be clear these are not night lights. There is a small red LED that lights to let you know that the unit is charging and ready to go if the power goes out. But the red LED is not bright enough to be a night light. For me, I have one mounted at the base of my steps so that no one trips coming down the stairway in the dark in a blackout. I have another one in the main hallway where the bedrooms are and I mounted one in the garage plugged into the ceiling outlet and pointing towards my fuse panel so I can work the panel when I setup my generator. The power went out here for about 3.5 hours a few weeks ago due to heavy storms. The outage occurred in the evening so it was a perfect test for these lights. As the lights went out these units started up automatically and stayed lit for the entire 3.5 hours with no issues noted. The lights aren't blinding bright but they are sufficient for illuminating the way in any room they may be mounted in. One other small quibble is that these lights are not end user serviceable so I don't think you can change the battery on the unit. I see there are 4 small phillips screws in the back of the unit that allow you to take the unit apart. I haven't done so yet but I don't think you can change the battery. I can't say how long they will stay lit for since the power did come back on so your mileage may vary! I liked these lights so much that I bought a second set for my home and a set for my daughter's home. I researched so many of these before buying them and these were supposed to last longer than any others & they DO. The minute the power goes out these kick on and give you plenty of light to see by and they can also be used as a flashlight if you change it to shine out the top. These are truly a life saver in a power outage. My kiddo is scared of the pitch black in his room when the power goes out so having one in the hallway gives him a little more sense of security. You won't regret buying these!! They're awesome!!

My beloved partner has a serious phobia of the dark. We live in an RV, and one of the spots we stayed at had woefully unpredictable power. The random outages were taking its toll on him, so I picked up a few of these. Problem solved. I have two complaints. First, they are too bright! The LEDs have a clear cover that does not diffuse the light, so the white bare bulbs are too jarring for my taste. I experimented with what I had on hand and ended up covering the main light with foam medical tape. My other grumble is the red indicator light is, again, way too visually disruptive for me. I covered that with tape too. I picked the Amertac brand over other power failure lights because I liked their style. I have to admit, though, that my liberal use of foam tape on that probably negates that a bit. I would love it if they had more diffuse covers over the lights in general. Upon purchasing these two, I now own 5 such lights (not counting one my mom didn't want to give back to me!). We find them awfully handy. The control switch is easy to use and intuitive. I would absolutely love different brightness options, but y'know. Also, I don't see myself ever using these as a substitute for actual flashlights, even though they're comfy to hold as such. In flashlight mode, they're temporary flashlights meant to find the real flashlights. As it should be.
