Hape = High Quality Toys
This is the 3rd Hape toy we own, and I have come to associate this German company with quality wooden toys. Unlike a couple other brands (Melissa & Doug and Kaplan) I previously bought, their paint does not chip/flake off easily. The wooden pieces are very smoothly sanded and of beautiful quality. For this peg puzzle toy, the pegs are bendy, but sturdy. I believe they made them flexible, so kids, and adults alike, don't hurt themselves if they accidentally fall onto them. I do not have any issues of the shapes not fitting properly as a few reviewers have mentioned. My two year-old has already mastered putting the right shapes onto the right pegs (each peg has different positioning of the pins), and fitting the 4 pieces of the puzzle together. She has learnt to rotate the pieces through trial and error and with patience. It definitely helped improve her fine motor skills, plus, there are shapes and colors to learn as well. The only nitpick I have is that all the colors are varying shades of the same name, as in dark, medium, light pink, blue, green, except yellow and orange. All in all, this is an engaging and educational toy that kept my daughter's interest, even though it does not make sounds like so many of her electronic toys do.

Beautiful & Challenging
I wanted something durable, attractive and something my 18 month old wouldn't get bored with in a day. This toy was it! It has several levels of challenge including the large puzzle base + the blocks that go onto the pegs like "keys" in a sense. So you have to figure out which way to twist the pieces to get them on and off. Then on top of that, the blocks only fit onto a particular base. Plus there's a color grouping level of learning too. My son has yet to figure it all out and it's been about a week. I think this'll keep him perplexed (and entertained) for a while which is a good thing for mommy.

Great puzzle..
These were a perfect gift for my 2 year old son who adores puzzles! Challenging enough, but not too hard. This item is all wood, except for the pegs that the shapes go on. These are plastic but have a well thought out function as well, they are attached to the bottom with bungie like cords that allow them to move to the side when pushed sideways. I think this will keep them from breaking making them last longer (or keeping little ones from hurting themselves if they happen to fall on them)... Love this product :)

Good toy, but maybe for older toddlers.
This toy is awesome, kept several adults very entertained at Christmas. It's says 18 months and up, which I think is more that it's safe for that age, not that an 18 month baby could actually figure out the puzzle. So far the baby (19 months old) figured out how to fit the puzzle pieces together (unpainted part) but doesn't understand that the colored pieces have different number/shapes of holes to fit on different pegs. I expect that in a few months he will start to get the other pieces on there, with some adult help. I really like all the things it shows/teaches (number of pegs to holes on pieces, spatial reasoning to match pieces, matching shapes and colors, different hues of the same color, and coordination to manipulate everything), but there isn't much reward or "winning" from completing the puzzle. By the time a toddler can figure it out, it might also be boring for them.

Seriously Cool Developmental Toy
This is one of the cooler developmental toys we've purchased for our son, because it combines a lot of different possible teaching elements: reasoning, fine motor, shape sorting, color shades, jigsaw puzzles in sizes that are easier for kiddos with fine motor skill struggles to manipulate. This is one we're still working on helping our son to use across all of these possible modalities. My rating on this is based entirely on how many skills we can target with it for our kiddo (he has developmental delays, etc.). He himself doesn't have any great love for this toy, but that's not unusual for him. He will, however, work with me on it when I bring it out, so I consider it as successful as it usually gets with our handsome little man...

Well Made and Educational Toy
The pieces are nice size. I love that you can introduce the concept of light and dark colors with this. The fine motor development is the focal point of this toy. My daughter turned 2 recently and doesn't quite get how to line things up yet. It's a toy with a lot of growing into. She's happy to put the big chunky pieces together. Or she'll sort the pieces. The peg part is a smooth plastic which it looks like some aren't happy about. I bought a competitors that was solid wood and the pegs arrived broken. Returned it and bought this one. Wished I just bought this one to begin with.

Great and unique puzzle!
This is a great puzzle for toddlers! We have several regular puzzles, but this one is unique. It is challenging enough to keep their interest, and can be put together in different ways. It's well made of good quality materials, and it's beautiful to look at. My daughter is almost 2, and she loves it!

Pegs are PLASTIC
This is mostly my fault for not researching this closely enough and assuming Hape would make this toy out of all wood, but I am very disappointed that the pegs are plastic and I feel like the pictures of the toy are misleading because they very much look like the same wood that the base is made of. Additionally, there are splinters on one corner, visible within the unopened package. The pieces also don't appear to fit flush together, either. (I pushed the unopened toy flat against the ground to see how they fit and they aren't a very nice fit together. See photo.) Now, I am debating returning the toy. The plastic really gets me, though, because it seems so unnecessary and was definitely a slap-in-the-face wake-up call to not implicitly trust Hape toys to be all quality materials just because they are Hape brand. Lesson learned. If I could find another peg puzzle that had 4 separate peg configurations like this one, but was all wood, I would buy it. I ordered another puzzle that is a single puzzle peg that will buy me a short while to see if I can find an all-wood alternative to this Hape toy. The options are surprisingly limited, though. I really hope Hape reconsiders the plastic components of this (and future) toys they make; they should use the plastic only when necessary, we have too much plastic in this world already.

Excellent
