Mark Rydens carnival of curiosities Blending themes of pop culture with techniques reminiscent of the old masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the traditional boundaries between high and low art. His work first garnered attention in the 1990s when he ushered in a new genre of painting, Pop Surrealism, dragging a host of followers in his wake. He has trumped the initial surrealist strategies by choosing subject matter loaded with cultural connotation. Rydens vocabulary ranges from cryptic to cute , treading a fine line between nostalgic cliché and disturbing archetype. Seduced by his infinitely detailed and meticulously glazed surfaces, the viewer is confronted with the juxtaposition of the childhood innocence and the mysterious recesses of the soul. A subtle disquiet inhabits his paintings; the work is achingly beautiful as it hints at darker psychic stuff beneath the surface of cultural kitsch. In Rydens world cherubic girls rub elbows with strange and mysterious figures . Ornately carved frames lend the paintings a baroque exuberance that adds gravity to their enigmatic themes. Complex in its arcane and idiosyncratic subject matter, Rydens work can leave no viewer unmoved . Pinxit , whose title refers to the Latin term meaning painted by, is organized by the themes of Rydens major exhibitionsThe Meat Show, Bunnies & Bees, The Tree Show, and so onand includes collected essays by Yoshitomo Nara, Carlo McCormick, and others, and a new essay by culture critic Kristine McKenna. Rydens paintings and drawings are reproduced using the finest technique available, and over a dozen of the paintings are foldouts that open to a staggering 150 cm (59 inches) across. Many books have been published on Mark Ryden before, but none like this large-format monograph, released in a boxed Collectors Edition of 1,000 numbered copies, each signed by the artist ; and also available in an Art Edition of only 50 copies, which come with an artwork. This sweeping retrospective brings together nearly two decades worth of Mark Rydens paintings and works on paper, broadening the horizons of his uncanny universe and bringing it to the world, one big page at a time. Collectors Edition No. 511,050 Limited to 1,000 individually numbered copies, each signed by Mark Ryden Printed on archival-quality paper Quarter-bound book with leather spine Front cover features gold-relief embossing crafted by the master printers at Pressure Printing Comes in a clamshell box covered in cloth fabric Also available in an Art Edition of 50 copies with a silk screen print Review: Pinxit 2.0 is simply exquisite! - This is my second Pinxit book, yes I am a die hard Ryden fan that bought the limited edition version. I am madly in love with my limited edition copy (which is even bigger than this one!), but am scared to have anyone breathe on it. I bought this "unlimited edition" so that I could feel safe letting friends flip through it, rather than risking any damage to my signed copy. I was very pleased when I recieved my copy last week, it is almost as beautiful as the original, Taschen really puts out a stunning product. Even at $69.00 it is an incredible value, so the reduced $40 price on desertcart is practically a steal (the original was $1,000)! While not as big as the limited, its generous size and fabric cover will undoubtably impress. Every Ryden fan and art lover should have this in their library. The original is probably the most exquisite art book in the universe, version 2.0 is a close second! Go buy this book!!!!! Review: Ryden Lovers Will Rejoice - This beautiful and very large book offers the reader detailed images of the artwork of Mark Ryden. The book is divided into several sections, and each has an introduction by a different author. The text in this book is in English, French and German. The sections are: Preface The Artists Statement - Mark Ryden Introduction "Horror Vacui: Mark Ryden's Intricate World" - Kristine McKenna Works, Old and New "In the Pink of the Carnivalesque" - Debra J Byrne Includes: Slayer, Grey Animal, The Butcher Bunny, Blood, Sweat, Tears, The Creatrix The Meat Show "At Play in the Slaughterhouse of American Pop" - Carlo McCormick Includes: The Debutante, The Ecstacy of Cecelia, Inside Sue, Snow White Bunnies and Bees "Tracing the Connections Between Bunnies, Bees and Abe Lincoln" - Mike McGee Includes: Sophia's Mercurial Water, The Last Rabbit, The Magic Circus, The Ringmaster The Blood Show "Crimson Tide: The Blood Paintings" - Kristine McKenna Includes: Fountain, Wound, Weeping The Tree Show "Mark Ryden's Return to Nature" - Holly Myers Includes: Ghost Girl, The Apology, Dodecahedron Window, Allegory of the Four Elements, Yoshi, The Tree of Life The Snow Yak "Mark Ryden and the Snow Yak" - Kristen Anderson Includes: Long Yak, Heaven, Abominable, Grotto of the Old Mass, Snow Yak The Gay 90's "Searching for the Mystical in the Physical" - Amanda Erlanson Includes: Incarnation, Pink Lincoln, The Piano Man, The Parlour - Allegory of Magic, Quintessence, and Diving Mystery, Awakening the Moon Appendix "Finding Ryden" - Yoshitomo Nara The included artworks that I have mentioned are just a sample of the many paintings found in each section. Each section also has full page details from some of the paintings and there are several multi-page fold-outs included as well. Those familiar with Ryden's work may be familiar with some of the titles mentioned above, and some are familiar with his images and may not know the titles. For those more familiar with the images, in this book you will find big eyed children, suffering stuffed animals, many faces of Abe Lincoln, cuts of meat, pale ghostly girls, sinister liquids, unknown beasts, and many wonders that cannot be explained (by me). Ryden lovers will be captivated by the large detail images, they are beautiful.

The reproductions are excellent and include drawings that were done to plan the paintings. ( As an artist I am always interested in seeing the process.) The articles consider Ryden's work from many angles and are generally informative without drifting too far into art speak. The main bodies of the artist's work are included here, and the reader can follow the development of Ryden's imagery as he progresses from one theme to another. Some may find the imagery disturbing or sacrilegious, but I don't think that is the artist's intent. He seems to be questioning all belief systems including consumerism, materialism, religion and mysticism by creating awkward encounters their between pop culture representatives. The results are often humorous, but when considered more carefully they allude to feelings of loss and bewilderment. What appears initially to be a twisted version of a greeting card or an illustration in a children's book, becomes an expression of spiritual unrest.

Awesome Size
Ordered this book and received it today. I am mid-way through and am very pleased. I am glad that there is an affordable version of this book. It is a large, heavy book, which is not common for Mark Ryden's work. I have the Blood Book and it is tiny in comparison. What I love about this book is the size. You get to see the artwork details. It also has some works that are a 4 page fold out. If you are a fan of Mark Ryden, get this book before the price goes up, which it always does.

Wonderous art
This is a beautiful book; I'm so glad that it's in my library now. There are so many paintings of Ryden's suberbly printed with large detail prints and triple page foldouts to enjoy. There are also sketches and drawings for the final paintings which really give a sense of the artist's process. His work merits and demands careful observation so it is a pleasure to spend time enjoying each piece.

you'll be pleased to find such a rich compendium of his work
If you know this artist, you'll be pleased to find such a rich compendium of his work. The oversize dimensions makes it possible to appreciate the beautiful creepiness of his paintings, which are often very large scale. If you've had the experience of seeing the originals in a gallery, this is an entertaining reminder. If not, it's still a weird and fun art adventure. Great for a gift.

Comprehensive
Contains most of Ryden's art to date, organized by shows. Large format with huge foldouts and detail views. Paper front cover is very delicate and fades easily. This book is getting pretty scarce.

A stunning keepsake for the quirkyart lover...
I bought this book for my 19 year old daughter as a Christmas gift, knowing that she had studied Mark Ryden at college and loved his work. When the Amazon box arrived I actually struggled to pick it up thinking that there must have been multiple items inside. As I folded back the cardboard flaps and peered inside, however, I was instead gobsmacked to see this solitary masterpiece in all its glory! The hardback baby-pink cover with beautiful gold embossing was enough to tell me that the contents were going to be something to look forward to; but it wasn't until I actually held the book that the sheer dimensions and weight became obvious to me. Excited by what I'd seen so far, I carefully leafed through some of its large pages of stunningly colourful prints - totally mesmerised by the quirkiness of Ryden's instantly recognisable style. I had picked a winner - my daughter was going to love me forever and Pinxit would have pride of place in her considerable book collection. Christmas morning did not prove me wrong! In summary, this incredible collection of the work of Mark Ryden is a joy to behold - even for an art novice like me. It is fantastic value for money for such quality and entertainment value and is definitely something which will be enjoyed time and again over many years to come. Highly recommended.

Das Buch ist zudem in drei Sprachen nieder geschrieben worden: -English-Deutsch und Französisch- Die Werke sind nach Kapiteln Geordnet untergebracht: -Works, Old and New -The Eat Show -Bunnies and Bees -The Blood Show -The Tree Show -The Snow Yak -The Gay 90`s NICHTS FÜR ZARTE GEMÜTER: Obwohl die Werke was Kindlich harmloses und vom Zeichen-Styl eher etwas Karikatur-Haffes an sich haben, sind seine Werke dennoch Blutig, Provokativ, Verstörend, Schlüpfrig, Träumerisch-fantasievoll- aber auch Wunderschön von ihrem Anblick her.
