The collaboration of studio whiz Geoff Barrow and singer Beth Gibbons, Dummy was made at the same time as a short film noir called To Kill a Dead Man , and the same approach--gloomy, tormented, and wildly melodramatic--permeates the album. "Sour Times" (the hit in which Gibbons cries, again and again, "Nobody loves me, it's true") and the more cryptic "Glory Box" are the linchpins of the album, defining its sound: dark flashes of old soul and film music, dehumanised electronic bleeps, Gibbons emoting like she's consumed by shame, and a bass-and-beat pulse derived from the slow bump and grind of the Bristol scene that spawned Barrow's old collaborators, Massive Attack. --Douglas Wolk Dummy, the debut album by Bristol band Portishead, was originally released in August 1994 to critical acclaim, and won the Mercury Music Prize in 1995. Features the singles Numb, Sour Times and Glory Box. Review: Great Chill album - This is a great album, not on everyone’s radar but should be. Superb sound, great tracks, one of my favourite chill albums. If you’ve not heard it, maybe stream it first but if you do you will buy it. I think I’ve had this on just about every format available but the vinyl is my favourite. Review: A genuine classic - An album I've heard many times over the past 30 years at various places, from social gatherings to record shops but never actually owned in any format. I decided to finally get it on vinyl and it's even better than I remembered. Not a bad track on the album. No complaints about the pressing either (although I'm no audiophile).

The version you really NEED has 11 songs that includes Its A Fire. This doesn't.
Such a beautiful work and an absolute must have in your vinyl collection BUT unfortunately, I didn't spot that this version DOES NOT contain the extra track so it's a 4 star review from me on a 5 star album. Going to have to hunt down the 11 track version that I only own digitally.

Best electronic album ever made
My title says it all really - I just can't believe it's taken me 15 years to get hold of a copy! I never thought I'd be the sort of person who would be listening to jazz-infused, film-noir styled, scratch-laden downtempo, yet not only am I listening, I'm loving it more than anything else I've ever listened to! Other reviewers have done enough to explain just why this is such an aural delight. All I want to add is that it is very rare that an album brings with it complete satisfaction and joy in the way that 'Dummy' does to me - it's as close to perfection as I've ever encountered. Not one single weak track, no fillers, not even any annoying bits that could have been done without (as in the follow up 'Portishead'). As such, you can speak to a dozen different people about 'Dummy' and they will all have different combinations of their fave tracks - that's quite rare and shows the strength of the album. 'Sour Times', 'Strangers', 'Numb', 'Roads', 'Pedestal' - I can't decide! Who cares, just buy it and play it from start to finish as it deserves!

One of those exceptional albums
Dummy is the debut album of the Bristol-based group Portishead. Dummy is one of those CDs that still sounds as fresh as the day that it was released. So what's all the fuss about? Well basically, it's one of those exceptional albums where almost every single beat seems to be in place, every single little record scratch and sample fits into the mix and provides even more atmosphere, and lyrics that just melt in your mind. Each track really does create a new atmosphere of its very own that runs the range of emotions. Beth Gibbons is one of the main reasons this album truly comes to the fore. Gibbons effortlessly creates mood on every track, whether she's crooning on "It Could Be Sweet" or strutting it out to full effect on "Glory Box." Overall, if you're into trip-hop even the slightest and don't own this album, you should probably drop whatever you're doing and go out and buy it right now.

Legendary album that includes the track It's A Fire.
This review is for the 11 track version, the version of Dummy that has 'It's A Fire' on it. I never realised It's A Fire was on Dummy - my CD copy from 1994 doesn't feature this track. So I felt compelled to get this version of the album to add to my mini Portishead collection. Anyone know why it got removed from other editions of the album? If you're new to Portishead I would recommend getting this version because It's a A Fire is a fantastic track and enhances an already mega album to even greater heights of excellence and art. To have the album without this track, well, you'd be missing out! Go get it!!

Stupendo

Unforgettable sound experience
The vinyl arrived in great shape and is solid 180g pressing. The sound quality is excellent and hearing Beth Gibbons’ voice on vinyl is an unforgettable experience. A must have for any Portishead fan!
