I just ordered them :-)** A: We never used a mat and have had no issues in the 4 years we've had it. **Q: What keeps it from floting** A: Weight. You'll need to add some kind of weight to the bottom of the steps in the pool. It recommends sandbags. I used large kitty litter jugs with rocks in the bottom of the jug and then filled to the top with water so they would sink and then bungee cords to attach them to the bottom of the ladder. I used 2 jugs on each side and they worked well. Now I don't weigh them down and let them float - it makes it easier for my 100lb Black Lab to rest on them. **Q: It this easy to get in and out of the pool at the begining and end of the season?** A: My son and myself were able to easily lift this out of the pool at the end of the season. **Q: Can this attach to a deck?** A: We cut the ladder and bolted it to our wooden deck. We used it as it was designed as an external ladder at first, then after 3-4 summers we built a deck, cut the ladder, and bolted to the deck.
