Use your imagination. **Q: does this lock engage metal-to-metal? or is the receiver plastic?** A: It is metal onto a metal post with high density plastic latch. It is fairly solid but not a high security lock. **Q: I'm wanting to use this to lock my kitchen cabinets and if the cable portion of the lock can be used at a shorter length than the maximum?** A: Yes it can stop along the way. While its compact it's still pretty big. **Q: Does the cable retract when the lock is locked? You can pull it out and wrap it around and the retract and take up the slack but once you insert the loose end into the lock that is it. No more adjustment.
